Happiness from Greenery (हरियाली से खुशाली)

India’s ambition of increasing vegetation on additional 26 million ha; and sequestering additional 2.5-3 billion tCO2 eq; will require addressing the problems related to land degradation.Overlaying of India’s Wasteland Atlas, the Desertification and Land Degradation Atlas, the water-stressed districts map, and the forest and tree cover map reveals that about 40% of India’s geographical area is highly degraded and is water scarce. It is predicted that the population of this region will soon face challenges related to food, water and livelihood security. To help counter this environmental adversity, PKC aims to develop self-sustaining terrestrial ecosystems (vegetation cover and inland wetlands) by restoring degraded lands based on models that use water, agriculture, forests, energy, wastes and livelihood nexus.

Vision

India’s vision of achieving carbon neutrality by 2070 requires increasing vegetation cover and using the sequestral carbon to offset emissions from fossil fuel.

Description

Our projects incorporate local situations, contexts and problems to create a conducive environment for the sustainable production and trade of a variety of biomass by identifying industrial demand, developing market linkages, strengthening micro-financing platforms, and developing platforms for vegetation based Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting.

Impact

  • Develop GIS maps for vegetation restoration highlighting areas with potential of success with minimum inputs.
  • To increase vegetation cover on 100,000 hectares of degraded private and public lands.
  • To mitigate climate change by sequestering (creating a sink) of more than 1.7 million tCO2 pa from 2030 onwards.
  • To create water bodies and increase biodiversity including ecosystem services.
  • To help in climate change adaptation and provide sustainable livelihoods to people through production forestry/ agroforestry based on fibre for paper and plywood industries, NTFPs including biomass for biofuels and green energy (floatovoltaics and agrivoltaics).
